How does the worthless become valuable? How can something completely worn out be reborn? What is our vision and understanding composed of: the image we assume or the history of the object we see, or perhaps both? How can art act as alchemy?
Silvia and Antía Sánchez’s public art piece The Red Thread, which can be translated as a “guiding thread”, transforms textiles and clothing donated by Loviisa residents that have already lived a past life, along with family text fragments brought from Spain, into a landscape of collective memory.
The fabric mural combines a visual layer – sky, sea, hills, rocks, and trees that may resemble boat masts – with a narrative and participatory layer made of fabrics painted and sewn during workshops held in Loviisa. Approximately 50 children and adults participated in creating the artwork.

The COVA collective is a Galician artist group whose work stems from a deep appreciation of nature. Through their artistic activities, the group aims to strengthen an experiential and reflective dialogue with the environment.
